Johann Strauss - Overture to die Fledermaus
Grieg - Piano Concerto in A minor
Dohnányi - Symphony no.2
Petr Limonov piano
Robert Max conductor
Johann Strauss the younger was known as the king of Viennese waltzes, and his overture to the operetta Die Fledermaus (The Bat) is one of his best-loved works.
Grieg's Piano Concerto in A minor is one of his most popular and dramatic works. We welcome Petr Limonov to play this concerto, with its grand opening arpeggios and lively finale.
Dohnányi's second symphony is a substantial work scored for a large orchestra, composed
towards the end of the second World War. It combines music in the style of the
Romantic period with modern and Hungarian influences, including a classic dramatic poem of Hungarian literature,
The Tragedy of Man by Imre Madach. The drama is reflected in sections of the symphony
that are reminiscent of modern-day film scores for big-screen adventures.
